Abstract
Now it is official. The year 2000 rates for caesarean birth for England and Wales and the 2001 rates for Northern Ireland are comparable to those in Italy and the USA (Thomas and Paranjothy, 2001). What has been predicted and expected for some time is true. The UK, with one of the strongest midwifery systems in the world, has one of the highest rates of caesarean section (CS). Where have we gone wrong? Is there something more we could have done? Is there more we can do now?
