Longtemps considérés comme des objets naturels exploités par l’homme pour y mener ses activités économiques, les fleuves et estuaires européens ont été fortement modifiés pour répondre à ces fonctions. Ce sont des "anthroposystèmes", des systèmes hybrides et interactifs entre des écosystèmes et des sociosystèmes. Les populations urbaines de plus en plus nombreuses y voient maintenant des lieux de récréation et de détente qu’il faut aménager en conséquence. Leur gestion, et donc les mesures à prendre pour les faire évoluer dans le futur, ne peut donc pas se résumer à une seule démarche technique. Elle doit prendre en compte également ce rôle de régulation sociale que jouent les plans d’eau en tant que lieu d’accueil et de détente pour une population urbaine de plus en plus nombreuse. Les aspects patrimoniaux, paysagers, ludiques, prennent ainsi une place de plus en plus importante dans une vision prospective de ces milieux. Cette réflexion nécessite de mettre en place une démarche multidisciplinaire basée sur une organisation des recherches à l’échelle régionale. C’est le principe des zones ateliers de recherche en environnement.
