Abstract
PART Four of The Place-Names of Leicestershire documents the history of the place-names in the fifty-four parishes of Gartree Hundred in the south-east of the county. Study of the toponymic record of this part of Leicestershire is facilitated by three significant collections of medieval material: the Peake MSS (Nevill of Holt), the Market Harborough Parish Records and the Shangton Records. Much of the material in the volume was collected from these sources by the author during the 1960s. Unlike some of the earlier EPNS volumes, the Leicestershire volumes are self-contained regarding lists of elements and indices, making them very practical for the user and avoiding complex systems of cross-referencing between volumes. The present volume includes a thorough glossary of place-name elements (301–75) and an index of place-names (377–92). Extensive materials relating to minor names and field-names, including Ordnance Survey map data from the 1950s and 1960s, are appended to the onomastic discussions for the relevant civil parish. Cox pays particular attention to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century names relating to canals, railways, inns, and taverns, stressing their importance and lamenting that such names are ‘frequently disregarded or undervalued’ (xiv).
