Abstract
Compromis avec la modernité. Ethnographie et vie quotidienne dans une plaine rizicole du Japon L'anthropologie insiste pour mener de front l'analyse culturelle et l'investigation historique. Ce faisant, elle constitue une voix indispensable pour éluder le choix pénible entre le modernisme, qui rejette platement le passé comme source d'inspiration, d'une part, et le postmodernisme, qui t'ait allègrement main basse sur les créations du passé. Cet essai montre comment une petite région du nord du Japon lutte contre ces puissants courants en articulant les tentations et les pièges de la modernité dans les idiomes de la rationalité et de la nostalgie. Je procède pour cela en esquissant tout d'abord le processus tortueux par lequel la riziculture s'est mécanisée, puis en décrivant les politiques qui ont intentionnellement sentimentalisé la culture f'estive locale. Le langage de la rationalité permet à ces gens de transformer leur vie quotidienne sans renier les contours du passé régional, et ils luttent pour conserver leurs traditions sans pour autant s'engluer dans la sensiblerie.
