Abstract
Cette étude, liée à la commande de vitraux par le musée des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Lô (50) à Sergio de Castro en 2008, a pour ambition de se pencher sur la démarche de cet artiste dans le domaine du vitrail. En 1956-1959, ce peintre, de renommée internationale, réalise ses premiers vitraux (exécutés par J.J.K. Ray) pour le couvent de Couvrechef près de Caen. En 1968-1969, il crée ceux du temple de la Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche à Hambourg (Allemagne), en 1978-1981, ceux de la collégiale de Romont (Suisse) et enfin des vitraux pour des particuliers ou des expositions. Grâce aux archives conservées par l’artiste, nous pourrons évoquer la totalité de ses interventions dans le vitrail et révéler notamment l’importance de projets inaboutis entre 1981 et 1989, pour des édifices tels que les cathédrales de Strasbourg (67) et de Nevers (58), la collégiale d’Écouis (27), l’église de Bormes-les-Mimosas (83), ou la bibliothèque de Limoges (87).
