Abstract
A recent article by Thurmond and Brown called for “a major cultural shift” in veterinary education.1 Such a proposed shift would more effectively prepare veterinary graduates to assume roles in emerging fields related to animal health, such as food safety, biotechnology, public health, environmental health, and others. In such fields, veterinarians must be prepared to work across sometimes deep cultural, as well as economic and disciplinary, boundaries.2 Some of those boundaries have been built by veterinarians themselves. The purpose of this commentary is to discuss some of the ways in which the profession can identify and move beyond its own cultural borders.
