Cet article porte sur les représentations de la villégiature à Montréal au tournant du XXe siècle. S’inscrivant dans le contexte d’urbanisation et d’industrialisation de cette époque, la villégiature correspond à la recherche de la nature par l’urbain et à son désir de rompre avec le rythme de la ville par le biais des vacances. L’examen de journaux montréalais entre 1895 et 1910 montre qu’en dépit de sa volonté de fuir la ville et ce qu’elle suppose (pollution, stress), le villégiateur désire reproduire plusieurs éléments urbains en villégiature. Ceci révèle l’existence de plusieurs contradictions. D’une part, l’exaltation d’une nature champêtre s’accompagne d’un désir de modifier la campagne pour la rendre plus belle et plus confortable, selon les critères et les besoins des villégiateurs. D’autre part, l’idéalisation des vacances et du temps libre se jumelé à la crainte de la vacuité et à la confection d’un emploi du temps calqué à l’image du rythme organisé de la vie urbaine. Considérée dans un tel contexte, la villégiature est un révélateur d’une période en turbulence et permet de saisir l’emprise des changements urbains et industriels sur la mentalité urbaine.
