Abstract
Au Québec, la sociologie, qu’elle soit religieuse ou non, fut dans les années 1950 directement imbriquée à la sociologie pastorale. Se légitimant par une référence rapide à l’École de Chicago, cette sociologie pastorale canadienne-française a principalement emprunté aux méthodes de la sociologie catholique française développée notamment par Gabriel Le Bras. Cependant, des contextes contrastés suscitèrent l’élaboration de travaux fort différents. Ainsi, on ne retrouve pas au Québec dans les analyses des paroisses, ni la thèse selon laquelle la misère matérielle entraîne un éloignement progressif de l’Église, ni celle voulant que l’appartenance géographico-culturelle ait un impact sur la dispersion des taux de pratique religieuse. En fait, c’est toujours le problème de l’urbanisation comme phénomène global qui oriente les recherches des sociologues québécois. L’écroulement de la pratique religieuse dans les années 1960 ne fit que confirmer, du moins en apparence, la loi implacable de la sécularisation, sonnant par le fait même définitivement le glas des enquêtes empiriques « à la Boulard » au Canada.
