Abstract
Este artículo está dedicado a analizar la representación de la Conquista de México en la ópera Montezuma, una obra de Federico II y el compositor alemán Carl Heinrich Graun que se estrenó en Berlín en 1755. A través de la discusión de su genealogía y precedentes, el artículo ilustra de qué manera las narraciones históricas españolas sobre la conquista y la colonización de América se transformaron al pasar de un género a otro y ser recibidas fuera del mundo ibérico. Investiga, asimismo, cómo una forma artística relativamente nueva, la ópera, abrió oportunidades casi inexploradas para la transmisión de conocimientos históricos y filosóficos que Federico II y Karl Heinrich Graun investigaron con sumo interés. En este sentido, Montezuma fue concebida como una ópera en la que historia, música y literatura confluían no sólo para representar el fin del imperio azteca sino también para divulgar la filosofía política de este monarca ilustrado.
