Abstract
Historycy odegrali ważną rolę w życiu politycznym i kulturalnym Polski.Świadomość większości społeczeństwa polskiego, kształtowała się pod wyraźnym wpływem obrazu przeszłości państwa przekazanym przez historyków.Bez poznania swych narodowych dziejów nie sposób zrozumieć zjawisk współczesnych.Historycy w Polsce stali się nie tylko kuratorami przeszłości, ale w istotny sposób wpłynęli na interpretację zjawisk historycznych.Ich przesłanie było adresowane do im współczesnych obywateli i do przyszłych pokoleń.Historiografia polska zawsze miała krytyczny stosunek do przeszłości, dokonywała rewizji dawnych prac, stawiała nowe hipotezy badawcze i rozwijała nowe kierunki interpretacji narodowej przeszłości.Ocena historiografii polskiej nie jest zadaniem łatwym, zwłaszcza, kiedy próbę taką podejmują osoby mieszkające poza krajem.Z tego powodu z wielkim zainteresowaniem należy przyjąć pojawienie się oceny polskiej historiografii z okresu od Oświecenia do II wojny światowej przygotowanej przez pracowników i współpracowników Uniwersytetu w Toronto.Praca Nation and History.
