Abstract
L’année 2003 a été marquée par la politisation accrue des relations économiques sino-américaines centrée sur le débat autour de la valeur du yuan. Néanmoins, après plusieurs mois d’invectives diplomatiques, cette question a été reléguée à l’arrière-plan du débat politique américain. Nous avancerons ici que, bien que l’intransigeance de Pékin explique en partie ce changement de cap, ce dernier s’explique surtout par l’intérêt commun qu’ont les deux pays à préserver des relations économiques bilatérales cordiales et par l’inquiétude des autorités chinoises de mettre en péril la croissance économique, source de légitimité du régime et facteur de stabilité sociale.
