Cet article se penche sur le contrat conclu en 1934 entre le gouvernement du Costa-Rica et la multinationale americaine United Fruit pour la culture de la banane, les luttes sociales qui l'ont accompagne, et ses consequences pour la population antillaise du pays. La culture de la banane, en declin sur la cote Atlantique, a ete relayee par l'exploitation de la cote Pacifique, a la faveur du contrat de 1934, mais la main-d'oeuvre antillaise n'a pas beneficie pour autant de nouvelles opportunites d'emplois. Cette periode au contraire correspond a la culmination des pressions dont ils furent l'objet : l'assimilation ou le depart
