Abstract
Lorsque la municipalité d’Ottawa approuve en 1966 le plus vaste projet de rénovation urbaine jamais entrepris au Canada, à savoir celui de l’est de la Basse-Ville, le principal quartier francophone de la capitale, le journal Le Droit affiche un enthousiasme débordant. Il n’hésite pas à soutenir cette initiative, née d’une volonté de moderniser un centre-ville marqué par l’insalubrité. Il faudra attendre près d’une dizaine d’années, lorsqu’une grande partie du plan aura été réalisée, pour assister à un revirement dans la position du journal, qui constate alors les effets dévastateurs de la rénovation urbaine sur les conditions de vie des habitants. Les prises de position initiales des journalistes ont été influencées par le manque d’expertise des informateurs issus de la communauté locale. Les spécificités du journalisme de proximité desservant une population minoritaire ont ainsi joué un rôle dans la couverture du Droit. Telle est la thèse que nous explorons ici, à travers l’analyse de contenu du journal sur une période de près de 15 ans.
