À partir d'une étude de quatre oeuvres de fiction produites entre 1847 et 1981, nous cherchons à déceler les principaux traits d'une figure romanesque du Patriote. Cette étude confirme celle de Maurice Lemire quant à la réticence à mettre en scène les Rébellions et leurs actants, ainsi que l'hésitation à prendre position sur les événements. Notre lecture d'un corpus restreint révèle, par ailleurs, certaines constances dans la mise en scène du Patriote historique : situé en marge de l'action politique et militaire officielle, le « vrai » patriote n'est le plus souvent pas un Patriote. Son engagement, tout en étant concentré sur le bien de la famille ou de la paroisse, transcende les limites de celles-ci pour rejoindre le bien humain universel. En même temps, l'attachement au pays et à la famille n'est pas un héritage paternel direct : le « vrai » patriote accuse dans tous les cas un problème de paternité ou de filiation de sorte que la descendance de la race des Patriotes passe par des chemins bifurqués.
