La méthode décrite ici sert à produire des estimations de familles de recensement suivant un certain nombre de caractéristiques, notamment : la taille, le nombre d’enfants, le groupe d’âges de l’époux, de l’épouse ou du chef et l’état matrimonial du chef. Cette méthode a été conçue de façon à tirer parti des données relatives aux familles dans les sources statistiques majeures : les recensements du Canada, la statistique de l’état civil et l’enquête mensuelle sur la population active. Dans une première étape, on estime le nombre des familles à partir du dernier effectif recensé auquel on ajoute le mouvement mesuré à partir de sources diverses dont l’état civil. Ce procédé a le mérite d’identifier et de mesurer les facteurs responsables de la croissance du nombre des familles et il a donné d’excellents résultats lorsque testé sur des périodes antérieures. La seconde étape consiste à répartir l’effectif total suivant certaines caractéristiques en utilisant des distributions tirées de l’enquête sur la population active. Non seulement les données de cette enquête permettent-elles une infinité de recoupements de variables, mais encore, la fréquence des collectes garantit une information parfaitement à jour.
