Partout sur la planète, le capitalisme est à la recherche de nouvelles ressources à exploiter pour nourrir une croissance économique dont il est de plus en plus évident qu’elle ne pourra se poursuivre indéfiniment (Latouche, 2007; Kempf, 2007 et 2009). Dans plusieurs pays pauvres d’Amérique latine, d’Afrique et d’Asie, mais aussi en Europe et en Amérique du Nord dans les régions à la recherche d’un projet d’amélioration des conditions de vie, le tourisme apparait souvent comme une panacée, le remède à tous les maux. Cette mise en tourisme signifie qu’il faut « vendre » un produit que les touristes achèteront. Il peut s’agir de services, d’artisanat, mais il s’agit souvent de paysages. Domont rapporte d’ailleurs des travaux récents qui montrent que les paysages (landscapes) influencent les migrations (Domont, 2011, p. 339). Mais que vend-on au juste quand on vend un paysage? En fait, comment celui-ci devient-il une ressource? Comment est-il consommé? Et quels sont les enjeux et les conséquences pour les populations locales? Ce court texte vise à présenter quelques éléments sans prétendre faire le tour de la question, histoire d’assoir les débats autour de cette notion de paysage sur des bases solides.
