Abstract
Current proposals to decant elderly long-stay patients into upgraded private care homes make me think of the home for aged schizophrenics across the street from my own home in West Hampstead. It is a normal-looking suburban house on the path to Hampstead Cemetery. I thought of buying it when it came on the market 40 years ago for £2,100, which was then cheap for a three-bedroom house in our area. But the stench inside was overpowering because two elderly sisters had kept seven incontinent cats for many years. The sisters were persuaded to fumigate and repaint the house, selling it to a publisher and his bookshop-manager wife who had three children the same age as mine. We became good friends over the next quarter century until divorce and death broke up that family and the house was put up for sale.
