Abstract
Abstract In the following article I make a case for how gender relations contribute to a social dynamic in the social work classroom based on male denial and female shame. I explain the professor's faulty construction of the students as other, especially in a classroom that is focused upon the difficult topics of prejudice and disadvantage. Through the discussion of the abject and defilement rituals I argue that male social work professors need consider how their involvement in the classroom replicates troubling patriarchal relations. By making shame, denial and the abject teachable concepts in the classroom students can imagine forms of practice that deal with gender inequity.
