Abstract

Normal outbred adult rabbits obtained from the same breeder at different times and from different breeders at the same time display a difference in their capacity to give a primary humoral immune response with respect to conventional antigens. This variation in response is characterized by marked differences, both in terms of sensitivity to the amount of antigen injected, and in terms of the resistance or susceptibility of the response to whole body irradiation. Thus, the humoral immune response may ensue through the participation of both the antigen-reactive cell and antibody-forming cell or through the mediation of the antibody-forming cell only. These 2 cell pathways can be differentiated on the basis of their sensitivity to irradiation.
