Cet article s’intéresse aux politiques d’actions sociales qui déploient comme méthodologie de prise en charge la relation d’aide. Afin d’en apprécier les différentes composantes et d’en mesurer les enjeux tant du point de vue des professionnels que des usagers, l’auteur s’appuie sur des données d’une recherche ethnosociologique réalisée plus spécifiquement sur la relation d’aide mise en place dans le cadre du dispositif d’insertion sociale et professionnelle promu par la loi portant sur le Revenu Minimum d’Insertion (RMI). L’article s’attache à caractériser cette dynamique et à construire les composantes de son efficacité. La relation d’aide, grâce aux formes multiples qu’elle peut revêtir et aux tactiques qui peuvent s’y déployer, tente, dès lors que les publics sont durablement inscrits dans ces dispositifs de prise en charge, de réaliser deux objectifs contradictoires : accompagner les publics dans une place durablement disqualifiée, tout en leur permettant de préserver, ou de construire avec eux si besoin, une identité sociale « acceptable » parce qu’à peu près acceptée, et de vivre convenablement leur situation d’autonomie sociale dans une dépendance objective.
