Abstract
A symposium, organized by Douglas Boucher (Union of Concerned Scientists), "Tropical Deforestation and Climate Change: The Science and the Policy," was held during the 93rd ESA Annual Meeting at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Friday, 8 August 2008.Tropical deforestation, the source of ~20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, is both a major concern and an enormous opportunity for the effort to slow global warming and avoid the worst consequences of climate change.The symposium considered this issue from a variety of perspectives, ranging from global policy to on-the-ground implementation, and over time periods ranging from the Archaean to the 21st century.
