Abstract
Cet article étudie le parcours d’Henri de Ste Gême, un réfugié de Saint-Domingue, dans l’espace atlantique entre 1769 et 1842. Ce militaire français d’origine sera au coeur des Révolutions française et haïtienne et ses activités reliées à la flibusterie, à la contrebande ainsi qu’au négoce l’amèneront autant à Cuba qu’à La Nouvelle-Orléans. Son arrivée en 1809 en Louisiane s’inscrit dans un grand mouvement migratoire, puisque plus de 10 000 réfugiés saint-dominguais immigrent cette année-là. Ste Gême sera notamment reconnu pour être un financier des corsaires Lafitte, et sa participation à la Bataille de La Nouvelle-Orléans lui vaudra les félicitations du Général Andrew Jackson. Ste Gême quittera définitivement La Nouvelle-Orléans en 1818 pour retourner en France avec son épouse, laissant derrière lui trois enfants illégitimes ainsi qu’une habitation prise en charge par des amis.
