Aunque se dice que la mesoamericana desapareci? tras tres siglos de colonizaci?n espa?ola, el artista zapoteca Nic?foro Urbieta mantiene que sus huellas persisten en lo que ?l llama pensamiento visual Usando ejemplos tomados de la vida diaria de un pueblo zapoteco, quisiera proponer, pues, que el concepto mesoamericano de escritura (que significa tanto escribir como pintar) nunca fue subordinado por completo por el alfabeto y pretendo demostrar hasta qu? punto la definici?n de la escritura como representaci?n del habla revela cuan poco se sabe sobre el acto de hablar. A la luz de estos prop?sitos, acudo a la definici?n del lenguaje usada por los investigadores del gesto (para quienes el lenguaje pertenece tanto a la imagen como a la acci?n verbal) para abrir un camino hacia el reconoci miento de la mesoamericana, que quiz? nunca haya desaparecido.
