Abstract
Selon la plupart des historiens, il y aurait eu pénurie de monnaie métallique en Amérique du Nord britannique avant la Confédération. Les négociants auraient résolu ce problème en ayant recours aux banques à chartes, qui émettaient du papier monnaie. Ces billets avaient une valeur nominale relativement élevée (5 shillings ou $1 et plus), et ceci limitait leur utilité au comptoir des magasins généraux ruraux. Les marchands des campagnes et leurs clients contournaient le problème en ayant recours aux payements en nature et aux comptes courants. Toutefois, les livres de comptes de trois marchands du Nouveau Brunswick et de l'arrière pays Montréalais suggèrent que la pénurie d'espèces variait dans le temps et dans l'espace, et dépendait beaucoup de la conjoncture économique. Le cas de l'un des deux marchands néo-brunswickois suggère également que les marchands ruraux ne voyaient pas nécessairement les banques et le papier monnaie comme la meilleure solution à leurs problèmes.
