Abstract
The backscattered electric field equation due to a single scatter off an iceberg is derived in the context of a monostatic high frequency surface wave radar with a vertical dipole source driven by a pulsed waveform. Starting with a general electric field equation, the condition of backscatter is applied and the resulting equation is inverse Fourier transformed. In the time domain the excitation current of the dipole transmit antenna is specified to be a pulsed sinusoid signal. The resulting electric field equation is simplified and its physical significance is assessed. It is found that the backscattered electric field is the result of single scatters off each point in the iceberg.
