Parmi les hypothèses qui ont été élaborées à la suite d'un certain nombre de travaux récents sur le milieu rural canadien-français, celles qui se rattachent à la classification des municipalités agricoles du Québec méritent sûrement une attention particulière. C'est à partir du critère de la prospérité de l'agriculture que les municipalités agricoles du Québec ont été classifiées en trois catégories. Ce critère de la prospérité semble beaucoup plus sûr, par exemple, que l'occupation dont Gérald Fortin signale avec raison l'insuffisance comme critère de stratification du milieu rural. Nous considérerons ici comme municipalités d'agriculture prospère celles dont la majorité des cultivateurs peuvent vivre du seul revenu de leur ferme. Les municipalités d'agriculture moyenne seront celles où la majorité des cultivateurs doivent compléter leur revenu en dehors de la ferme, pour satisfaire leurs besoins. Enfin, dans les municipalités d'agriculture pauvre, l'agriculture n'est qu'une source de revenu supplémentaire pour la majorité. Dans le présent travail, nous résumerons l'analyse de données recueillies en 1958 auprès d'un échantillon de 174 travailleurs, répartis dans sept paroisses agricoles prospères du Bas-du-fleuve (tableau 1). L'objectif principal de notre étude était de vérifier les hypothèses sous-jacentes à cette classification, dans le cas des municipalités d'agriculture prospère, et de dégager certaines implications sociologiques. Dans une première partie, nous dégagerons les principales hypothèses sous-jacentes à l'agriculture prospère. En deuxième lieu, nous examinerons la situation de l'agriculture dans les municipalités d'où provient notre échantillon. Une troisième partie sera consacrée à l'étude de la structure et de la mobilité des occupations. Enfin, nous aborderons très brièvement les attitudes vis-à-vis les occupations.
