Au cours de la période 1970-1985, l'historiographie acadienne a connu un essor appréciable. Plusieurs éléments en attestent: l'expansion de la production universitaire, en particulier l'augmentation du nombre de mémoires et de thèses, la préparation de divers instruments de recherche, et la publication de plusieurs synthèses historiques, notamment de l'ouvrage collectif Les Acadiens des Maritimes . Cet essor masque toutefois certaines lacunes. Malgré l'émergence de l'histoire sociale, la production historiographique acadienne actuelle reste partiellement liée à la problématique nationale et à des approches traditionnelles. Elle paraît également s'élaborer de façon plutôt autonome, entretenant peu de relations avec les autres historiographies, en particulier avec les historiographies maritimienne et québécoise. Cette situation dépend de la faiblesse des effectifs d'historiens professionnels, mais aussi des enjeux idéologiques associés à l'écriture de l'histoire en Acadie.
