A clean break: Hydroboration of the side-on, end-on N2 unit of [{(NPN)Ta}2(μ-η1:η2-N2)(μ-H)2] (1; NPN=PhP(CH2SiMe2NPh)2) by 9-BBN results in the addition of the BH bond across the Ta–N2 moiety to generate a NB bond and a terminal TaH unit (2). Surprisingly, this species is unstable in solution. Thus, this hydroboration triggers a cascade of reactions that result in NN bond cleavage and ancillary ligand rearrangement in the formation of the imide–nitride species 3.
