Abstract
In the field of modern American cultural critique, Kenneth Burke has long seemed an acutely proleptic figure; however, Fredric Jameson has on occasion been critical of the limits of Burke’s notion of symbolic action. This paper argues that Jameson’s dissatisfaction overlooks the ways in which the great problematics of Althusserian Marxism and the logic of their resolutions are indeed fully present in Burke’s engagement with Marx.
