Abstract
Abstract Europe has experienced many changes in the last decade. International relations were redefined, national policies were confronted with internal fragmentation and processes of regionalism, borders were abolished, and new ones were established. These developments challenged perceptions of the nation‐state, the understanding of borders, and communities in border regions. Many border‐related institutions and organizations have gained importance in the context of political and economic restructuring. Today, the needs and interests of border regions are dealt with by various supranational, national, and regional institutions. Regional institutions in particular should be considered in the specific context of developments within border regions. This essays aims to retrospectively outline the evolution of border‐related institutions and networks as well as research centers that focus on border issues. Furthermore, the processes of European integration and enlargement are discussed along with the changes and characteristics of European cross‐border cooperation.
