Abstract
Twelve countries have received “critical use exemptions” to continue using limited amounts of the pesticide methyl bromide in 2005. The decision was reached during the 24–26 March inter‐governmental meeting on the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Countries receiving exemptions include the United States, Canada, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The United States requested an exemption for 9,446 metric tons, and agreed to 8,942 metric tons, or 35% of the 1991 baseline amount used by the U.S.
