Abstract
Après avoir proposé une définition du théâtre d’images, l’article s’attache à analyser la mutation du regard porté sur lui. Loué par les écrivains et critiques du xixe siècle (tels que Théophile Gautier, Émile Zola ou Stéphane Mallarmé), il a suscité, au cours du xxe siècle, une certaine méfiance de la part des penseurs du théâtre, qui voyaient en lui une forme d’allégeance à la société du spectacle. Or, s’il récupère les procédés de l’iconosphère, le théâtre d’images, tel qu’il se développe aujourd’hui, a tendance à s’éloigner de la simple production d’illusions visuelles, pour inviter le spectateur à un exercice du regard. En montrant comment les images sont construites ou en les rendant difficiles à saisir, il incite le public à les mettre à distance et à les interroger.
