RésuméLe parcours de Renaud Jean, leader paysan du PCF de 1920 à 1939, éclaire quelques-unes des sources du communisme français : le pacifisme consécutif à la Première Guerre mondiale, l’aspiration des exploitants familiaux à la propriété et les traditions républicaines héritées de 1789. Cette culture, que la bolchevisation du parti par l’Internationale communiste s’emploie à détruire pour lui substituer les dogmes léninistes, continue à orienter son action. Elle le met en position de rupture à peu près constante, sauf, précisément, en 1935-1936, lorsque la direction du PCF, pour des raisons qui tiennent largement à la stratégie mondiale de l’URSS, la reprend à son compte. Son exclusion de fait, en 1944, illustre les impasses du communisme.
