Abstract
Pour comprendre la genèse de la philosophie politique de Claude Lefort, il faut d’abord examiner la critique du marxisme que Maurice Merleau-Ponty propose dans Les aventures de la dialectique. Pour celui-ci, le marxisme est condamné à osciller entre deux pôles aussi intenables l’un que l’autre : ou bien il fait du prolétariat l’incarnation de la praxis, qui se définit comme fusion de la théorie et de la pratique, ou bien il objective le prolétariat et se fait par là le négateur de la praxis. Le marxisme de C. Lefort au cours des années 1950 est une illustration de cette oscillation. Or, l’analyse des écrits ultérieurs de Merleau-Ponty montre qu’il reconduit l’oscillation propre au marxisme après l’avoir pourtant critiquée. La philosophie politique de C. Lefort demeure aussi prise dans une telle oscillation, hésitant entre une théorie de la démocratie qui en fait une sorte de régime philosophique et une élaboration qui s’appuie sur l’idée que la démocratie est aveugle à elle-même et a besoin d’un « dehors » pour s’énoncer.
