Abstract
Une problématique complexe s’est développée dans la cité contemporaine autour du jeu d’argent et des institutions impliquées dans sa réglementation et son exploitation. Il est devenu une industrie intimement intégrée à la fiscalité. Nous rappelons d’abord certains moments cruciaux de l’histoire du jeu d’argent aux États-Unis, au Canada, en France et en Angleterre depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui en insistant sur le mouvement de va-et-vient entre l’acceptabilité sociale et la prohibition. Nous regardons comment la société et sa morale, l’État et le monde du jeu ont évolué pour que le jeu deviennent aujourd’hui une activité respectable. Nous faisons ensuite le point sur la situation contemporaine, le jeu en ligne et la mondialisation. Dans un deuxième temps, à partir d’une enquête par observation participante, nous développons une analyse théorique du jeu pathologique fondée sur les travaux de Pierre Bourdieu, Raymond Boudon, Bernard Lahire, Anthony Giddens et Erving Goffman.
