A new method of deducing the capillary length from the shape of a sessile drop is proposed. This method is based on variational calculus and is essentially an application of the Ritz method. The drop profile is approximated by an oblate spheroid and the shape of this ellipsoid is found using a suitable energy minimization principle. Conversely, if a spheroid is adjusted to fit an observed drop profile, then an explicit formula for the capillary length emerges. The method is applicable to all contact angles and, in most cases of interest, the method is accurate to within 2%.
