Abstract
Avant 1789, les côtes de Saintonge étaient ouvertes au commerce international. Les marchands de l’Europe du nord et leurs flottes venaient sur ces côtes pour acheter le sel de Brouage. Malgré tout, les migrants installés dans cette région étaient rares, par exemple dans les registres de mariage. Ils venaient plus souvent pour d’autres raisons que pour le commerce. La Saintonge recevait la plupart des migrants pour des raisons de politique coloniale. La plupart étaient des migrants temporaires et venaient de l’espace germanique. Ils furent envoyés sur les côtes atlantiques avant de traverser l’océan et de commencer une nouvelle et dangereuse vie en Guyane. D’autres vinrent du Canada français après la conquête anglaise. D’autres vinrent finalement en Saintonge pour retrouver leurs origines, comme les fils de la diaspora protestante.
