À partir de l'oeuvre de Valère Novarina, l'article confronte deux empires : l'empire de la communication, d'une part, qui nie l'esprit en posant l'évidence du sens et qui s'interdit le transcendant et plongeant dans la consommation, et l'empire de la verbigération, d'autre part, qui s'interdit de représenter pour faire place à l'absence, donc à l'esprit, et qui propose un passage du sens au non-sens par le biais d'un écoulement, d'un évidement indéfini. Si, chez Novarina, la verbigération est élevée en idéal à la fois esthétique et critique, c'est que la verbigération - comme forme de kénose - donne accès à une absence agissante inhérente à l'être humain, absence qui n'est sans doute pas autre chose que Dieu.
