In Madagascar, the global biodiversity crisis is being played out locally. A Canadian mining corporation, QIT-Fer et Titane, Inc., will be sponsoring a large-scale mining project in the extreme southeastern region of Madagascar. The project will result in the removal of much of the remaining coastal littoral rainforest. In this paper Marc Cadotte addresses some of the pertinent issues and draws attention to the need for international involvement to promote the conservation of biodiversity and non-destructive development. The author is a graduate student at the University of Windsor, Canada, and has recently returned from Madagascar. He spent six months researching fragmented patches of coastal rainforest in southeastern Madagascar.
