Abstract
L’histoire du théâtre en France a longtemps été centrée sur Paris : la centralisation de l’État français a entraîné une valorisation de la reconnaissance parisienne des oeuvres, des dramaturges et des acteurs. La manière dont on a écrit l’histoire du théâtre s’en est ressentie, non seulement par un effet miroir, mais aussi par une accentuation du phénomène, redoublé par le centralisme des études universitaires, l’accès aux sources en études théâtrales étant facilité à Paris par la proximité des grandes bibliothèques. Les histoires du théâtre français sont ainsi généralement limitées à l’histoire du théâtre parisien. Cette situation évolue depuis quelques décennies, grâce au regain d’intérêt pour l’histoire culturelle. Cette étude présente les recherches menées à Rouen en collaboration avec des musicologues, par des enseignants et des étudiants de Lettres, sur la vie théâtrale à Rouen au XIXe siècle. Elle souligne l’intérêt national de ce type d’études, qui ne se cantonne pas dans l’exhumation pittoresque d’un passé purement local, mais met au jour, par la comparaison entre Paris et la province, certains mécanismes de la réception des oeuvres dans leur contexte culturel global.
