Abstract
En dépit des circonstances fort modestes de la prépublication, et des deux premières éditions du Petit Traité de poésie française de Banville, ce manuel de versification se retrouva dix ans plus tard au cœur de la querelle sur la question de l’avenir du vers français : d’une part les Parnassiens, défenseurs de la pureté du vers traditionnel tel que réformé par Victor Hugo, et d’autre part les symbolistes et les décadents, partisans du vers libre. Chacun de ces deux partis défendit hardiment sa théorie en faisant appel à l’autorité de Banville. Leurs raisonnements respectifs révèlent l’impact du Petit traité sur l’évolution du vers dans les années 1880.
