Abstract
Dans le grand débat méthodologique qui oppose méthodes quantitatives et qualitatives, il semble que les chercheurs en sciences sociales aient souvent négligé l'interrogation fondamentale qui est celle du type d'explication que l'on cherche sur un objet bien défini. Cet article ne vise rien d'autre qu'à montrer, à travers le parcours d'une recherche empirique sur la mobilité sociale des femmes, les problèmes théoriques, méthodologiques et épistémologiques rencontrés et causés par l'absence de construction d'un objet de recherche (les femmes), ou d'un empirisme sans principes (application telle quelle de modèles construits pour les trajectoires professionnelles des hommes). Il aboutit cependant à proposer l'élaboration d'un nouveau discours sociologique, plus proche des acteurs sociaux et de leur histoire immédiate, par l'utilisation des récits de vie.
