Le Cantique spirituel et La vive flamme d'amour, de Jean de la Croix, sont lus ici comme exemples de construction discursive d'un genre féminin par un sujet masculin. L'objectif est de mesurer les caractéristiques et les limites d'une conception du genre comme performance (Butler) ou comme combinatoire (Probyn), conception courante en études des genres et qui postule un écart entre le sexe (naturel) et le genre (culturel et politique). Tout comme l'anthropologie sous-jacente aux deux poèmes de Jean de la Croix fait de « l'âme » le seul support du sujet, une approche post-structuraliste en études des genres peut renforcer un oubli du corps, surtout si elle est pratiquée par des hommes. L'auteur propose à cet égard un concept de corps comme sédimentation, qui prend en compte l'extension corporelle du sujet et de ses transformations.
