Abstract
La ponctuation est, pour la linguiste N. Catach (1996), une acquisition fondamentale de la communication humaine. Force est pourtant d’admettre que le domaine, relativement récent dans l’histoire de l’écrit, est difficile à appréhender pour les scripteurs (et lecteurs) non expérimentés que sont des élèves, voire pour les enseignants. Le traitement de la ponctuation dans les outils didactiques pose problème ; ce problème semble prendre racine dans la transposition didactique-même. Or le système de la ponctuation ne peut être compris par les élèves que s’il leur est correctement enseigné, et cet article propose une description de la ponctuation en tant que système. Il ouvre sur des pistes didactiques que nous espérons « salvatrices » pour empêcher la ponctuation, domaine complexe, mais riche, évolutif, offrant au scripteur de multiples possibilités stylistiques, syntaxiques, énonciatives, prosodiques, textuelles... d’être relayée une fois pour toutes au rang de caprice.
