Abstract
Dans La statue de sel d’Albert Memmi, au-delà de la dimension autobiographique et de l’illustration d’un espace et d’un temps historique en rapport avec la colonisation française en Afrique du Nord, le narrateur cherche à « se dire » et à dire l’Autre, d’où cette coexistence des communautés diverses, une mosaïque sociale où les conflits sont exacerbés, illustrés par des relations ambiguës d’attirance et de rejet, d’amour et de haine. Les mots désignant les identités prennent des connotations diverses selon celui qui parle, les connotations attribuées à ces « mots » sont souvent sources de malentendus, dénotant ainsi la difficile épreuve du rapport à l’Autre dans une société où se jouent des intérêts de pouvoir et de position sociale.
