Le roman Tristano meurt (Tristano muore) d’A. Tabucchi a pour personnage principal Tristano, ancien héros de la résistance italienne, à l’agonie, qui décide de raconter sa vie à un écrivain. Son récit est éclaté, les principaux épisodes sont disséminés dans la narration, la voix de Tristano est hallucinatoire. L’Histoire l’a trahi parce qu’elle est cette « créature glaciale qui n’a pitié de rien ni de personne ». La conscience individuelle du personnage figure les répercussions du chaos moderne. La voix de Tristano se révèle l’élément unificateur du chaos de l’Histoire et de son histoire.
