Abstract
The response of Syncrude fly ash to salt roasting varied significantly from sample to sample and thus, the optimum roasting conditions cannot specifically be defined for the Syncrude fly ash, but occur between 800 and 900 °C and with salt additions of 10 to 25%. Water leach extractions of vanadium ranged from 40 to 80% under these conditions, but leaching with Na2CO3 or Na2SO4 gave a much more consistent range of extractions from 73 to 89%.Characterization of the Syncrude fly ash also showed considerable variation among ash samples. Quartz, hematite, pseudobrookite, NiTiO3 and cristobalite were identified in the as-received October 98 ash with albite forming on heating with no additives and hauynite forming during salt roasting. Quartz and anhydrite were the only crystalline phases identified in the as-received December 98 ash. The anhydrite reacts with aluminosilicates in the ash to form anorthitic and/or albitic feldspars on heating with or without NaCl.La réponse des cendres volantes de Syncrude à la calcination au sel variait beaucoup d’un échantillon à l’autre et l’on ne peut donc pas définir de façon spécifique les conditions optimales de calcination, mais elles se trouvent entre 800 et 900 °C, avec additions de 10 à 25% de sel. L’extraction du vanadium par lixiviation à l’eau variait de 40 à 80% sous ces conditions, mais la lixiviation avec du Na2CO3 ou du Na2SO4 a donné une gamme d’extraction beaucoup plus consistante de 73 à 89%.La caractérisation des cendres volantes de Syncrude montrait également une variation importante parmi les échantillons de cendre. On a identifié du quartz, de l’hématite, de la pseudobrookite, du NiTiO3 et de la cristobalite dans la cendre originale d’octobre 98, de l’albite se formant lors du chauffage sans additif et de l’hauynite se formant lors de la calcination au sel. Le quartz et l’anhydrite étaient les seules phases cristallines identifiées dans la cendre originale de décembre 98. L’anhydrite réagit avec les aluminosilicates de la cendre pour former des feldspaths anorthitiques et/ou albitiques lors du chauffage avec ou sans NaCl.
