Cet article vise à analyser le rapport entre la mémoire et la publicisation des risques environnementaux associés aux anciennes mines d’uranium françaises. L’exploitation des mines d’uranium est liée à l’histoire du développement d’une nouvelle technologie, de sa maîtrise à son intégration dans une société jusqu’à sa gestion une fois l’arrêt total. La production d’uranium amorcée au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale s’est achevée en France en 2001 à la fermeture de la dernière mine. L’angle de recherche proposé porte sur les conditions de la vigilance post-exploitation et questionne les modalités de gestion des risques sur la longue durée. En effet, l’histoire des mines d’uranium n’est pas linéaire, elle articule plusieurs récits : l’épopée de l’exploitation, le réaménagement des sites et la surveillance, et enfin la vigilance dans la prise en compte du risque. Il s’agit plus particulièrement d’analyser la façon dont la mémoire se constitue et comment elle représente un enjeu stratégique dans la prise en compte publique du risque. Si la reconstitution d’événements susceptibles de faire trace intervient dans la mobilisation de cette mémoire, ce constat pose avec acuité la prise en charge du « mémorable » dans la gestion du risque.
