Abstract
Les problèmes du transport urbain sont aussi anciens que la ville. Aussi, ce n'est donc pas étonnant que l’urbanisme en ait fait un objet central de préoccupation dès sa naissance, au milieu du XIXe siècle. La place prise par le référentiel techniciste permettra toutefois aux ingénieurs d’occuper une place prépondérante dès le début du siècle dernier, au point où les questions d’urbanisme et de transport seront graduellement traitées distinctement, les dimensions urbanistiques étant mêmes ultimement subordonnées à celles qui relèvent des spécialistes en transport, et ce, en dépit des appels à la prudence lancés par certains observateurs. En évoquant, à titre illustratif, l’exemple de la région métropolitaine de Montréal, l’article montre que cette dérive explique en partie le cul-de-sac de la gestion de l’offre et de la demande et que le recours au concept de mobilité autorise un retour critique favorable à un renouvellement du lien entre urbanisme et transports.
