CO–D2O coadlayers on Pt(111): Vibrational studies at low coverages

Abstract
CO–D2O coadlayers on Pt(111), for D2O to coverages less than 0.23 monolayer, have been investigated by Fourier transform infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy. The absorbance cross section of O–D groups (both free hydroxyl and hydrogen-bonded molecules) was significantly enhanced in the presence of CO, irrespective of the dosing sequence. CO absorbance features were diminished linearly with increasing precoverages of D2O. Furthermore, the dosing sequence had a noticeable effect. A vibrational mode of D2O molecules at 2680cm−1 observed on the CO precovered surface did not form on the D2O precovered surfaces. It is concluded that strong attractive CO–D2O interactions are present in the coadlayers and that island formation and segregation play a significant role. A model for the scheme of coadsorbed D2O and CO molecules is presented.
